Starting from the mouth, the digestive canal runs through the chest cavity and the abdominal cavity ending up near the tail bone. The food inserted into the mouth is tasted by the tongue and pulverized by the teeth and thoroughly mixed with saliva. When swallowed the food is pushed into the stomach by a muscular movement called peristalsis.
Starting from the mouth, the digestive canal runs through the chest cavity and the abdominal cavity ending up near the tail bone. The food inserted into the mouth is pulverized and thoroughly mixed with saliva. When swallowed the food is pushed into the stomach by a muscular movement called peristalsis. The food remains in the stomach for three to four hours getting mixed with digestive juices called enzymes with a dose of Hydrochloric acid. The stomach can take about 4 litres of food at a time.
Digestion gets completed in the first part of the small intestine. This is a 3 meter long hose pipe, whose second part is specialized to absorb the digested food. Excess of water is absorbed in the large intestine. Some beneficial bacteria which can make vitamin B and K also reside here. Undigested matter, now called faeces or stool has to be removed through the anus from time to time.
